Oil and Gas companies are facing a significant upsurge in energy demand globally. The industry is evolving; balancing the demands of running larger scale projects, differing safety regimes and building large offshore rigs within a joint venture environment can be complex. This evolution ensures that the industry is moving at a faster pace than ever before and the days when a linear path to drill a well was followed have been replaced by multi-threaded business plans focused on quicker time to production.

Securing and optimising return on assets in the most flexible way – allowing for both long term growth or divestment is the goal. SAP Oil has a long history of working in the upstream industry and has delivered business advantage to over 1,200 clients who have chosen to innovate and extend more broadly the reach and impact of actionable operational knowledge.

Some of the major themes that we see in the region include:

  • How to mitigate risk: Transparency across multiple partners is a requirement for Operators, but not always the reality. From a cash-flow perspective, operations are inherently risky and so the onus on the operator is to have the most accurate and up to date information about their workforce, operations and financials to make the best decisions. Those who leverage technology to enable an organization to operate effectively and efficiently will mitigate the inherent risks modern day oil and gas developments entail.
  • A shallow labour pool: It is estimated that over 100,000 new recruits will be needed over the next decade in Aberdeen alone. Understanding how to reduce complexity, embed knowledge across the operation and not just with employees, with consistent and accurate information that is not leveraged in organisational silos is crucial.
  • Increasing Compliance and Regulations are significant and the need to prove and manage differing regulatory environments - and in compliance - with crews operating with contractors and other partners while not compromising on safety and sustainability has never been more important.
  • The green light to move forward around the shale or unconventional plays across Europe is varied; however, the economic and energy security benefits that shale gas development could bring are clear. The US unconventional renaissance, which is racing ahead of the rest of the industry, provides an excellent pool of processes and best practices. SAP Oil has worked with some of the world’s most successful operations to develop innovative solutions to support these complex and intensive activities.
  • The need for pro-active decision-making Highly skilled workers with access to poignant, digestible and timely operational data can make recommendations that dramatically improve results. Bridging front and back office to provide full operational transparency and enable effective management of assets. The business advantage lies with those who innovate to extend more broadly the reach and impact of this actionable operational knowledge.
  • The necessity to prevent overspending, as well as visibility and rigorous discipline around cost management - particularly important in a joint venture environment.
